A comparative examination of freedom, control, incarceration, surveillance, material capability and institutional power in the United States and China, with comparative evidence from other countries.
This book does not try to crown a winner. It asks how freedom actually works through institutions, material conditions and the mechanisms that expose people to coercion or give them a way to challenge it.
Five questions organize the comparison
- Permission: Are you legally allowed to do it?
- Capability: Are you realistically able to do it?
- Exposure: What can cause you to lose freedom?
- Procedure: What must happen before power overrides you?
- Remedy: What can you do when power is abused?
No single score combines those dimensions. A society can perform well on one and badly on another. The analysis also treats coercive systems as comparable without pretending unlike forms of coercion are morally interchangeable.
Evidence with the asymmetry left visible
The publication’s statistics were prepared in August 2026. The book explicitly notes that evidence environments are unequal, especially across the United States and China, and uses comparative cases to test claims rather than converting missing data into convenient certainty.
