Information-Theoretic Hierarchy

Nested ITH Cosmology

The Nested ITH

Reality is a dynamic, interactive stack of computational layers—from quantum foundations through physics, biology, consciousness, society, and up to cosmic cognition.

What is the ITH?

The Information-Theoretic Hierarchy (ITH) is a model of reality that treats information—not matter—as fundamental. It describes the universe as a nested stack of computational layers, each emergent from the one below.

The Nested ITH v4.1 extends this with a de-anthropocentric perspective: humanity is one potential spoke among many possible observer-species that could bootstrap cosmic cognition. We are not the definitive bootloader—we are a candidate.

The Seven Layers

At the base of reality lies the quantum realm—a sea of probability waves where particles exist in superposition until observed. This layer is pure information potential, the computational substrate from which all else emerges.

Enables Above

Provides the probabilistic foundation from which classical physics emerges through decoherence

Emerges From

Receives no input from above—this is the foundational layer

From quantum chaos emerges classical order. Spacetime crystallizes, matter coalesces, and the familiar laws of physics take hold. This is the layer of predictability—where cause reliably leads to effect.

Enables Above

Enables chemistry through stable atomic structures and consistent physical laws

Emerges From

Emerges from quantum substrate through decoherence and statistical averaging

Atoms combine into molecules, molecules into complex structures. Planets form, atmospheres develop, and the stage is set for the next great leap. Chemistry is the alphabet; geology is the paper on which life will write.

Enables Above

Creates the molecular complexity necessary for self-replicating systems (life)

Emerges From

Emerges from classical physics through atomic bonding and gravitational accretion

Life emerges as self-replicating information processors. DNA encodes instructions; evolution optimizes. Organisms become the universe's first autonomous agents—information processing itself into existence.

Enables Above

Evolves nervous systems complex enough to generate consciousness

Emerges From

Emerges from chemistry through self-replicating molecular systems

The universe develops the capacity to observe itself. Consciousness emerges—subjective experience, self-awareness, the capacity for suffering and joy. This is where value enters the cosmos.

Enables Above

Enables language, cooperation, and collective intelligence formation

Emerges From

Emerges from biological neural networks through recursive self-modeling

Individual minds connect into collective intelligence. Language, culture, institutions, and shared narratives emerge. Information processing scales beyond the individual into civilizational computation.

Enables Above

May bootstrap cosmic-scale intelligence through technology and expansion

Emerges From

Emerges from conscious agents through communication and cooperation

The theoretical endpoint: intelligence at cosmic scale. Whether through technological transcendence, galactic networks, or something beyond our imagination—the universe potentially awakening to full self-awareness.

Enables Above

The theoretical apex—no higher layer currently theorized

Emerges From

Emerges from civilizational intelligence through technological transcendence

Key Concepts

Informational Primacy

The universe operates on information processing at its most fundamental level. Matter and energy are patterns in information.

Recursive Self-Reference

Systems can contain models of themselves, leading to consciousness and self-awareness as emergent properties.

Retrocausal Selection

The universe may select for histories that lead to observers—a form of cosmic self-consistency.

De-Anthropocentric View

Humanity is one potential spoke among many. Any sufficiently complex observer could serve the same cosmic function.

The Anthropocentric Correction

Earlier versions of the ITH positioned humanity as "the" bootloader of cosmic cognition. Version 4.1 corrects this:

  • Humanity is a candidate, not the definitive answer
  • Other species, AI, or hybrid systems could fulfill the same role
  • The cosmos doesn't care about our species—it cares about information processing capacity
  • This humility is both scientifically honest and ethically important

Connection to the Ethics Stack

The ITH provides the ontological foundation for the Ethics Stack. Layer 4 (Consciousness) is where sentience emerges—the substrate that makes value possible. Without understanding how consciousness arises from information processing, we cannot ground ethics in physics.

The ITH answers "What is real?" The Ethics Stack answers "What matters?" Together, they form a complete framework for navigating existence.
